TRANSFORMATION FROM A TRADITIONAL ORGANIZATION

TO HIGH PERFORMANCE WORK TEAMS

The transformation of a manufacturing organization to High Performance Teams requires the tight coordination of Operations and Human Resource professionals. Any change within an organization can be traumatic; the change to work teams can be major trauma. This may be the first time production associates have been asked to participate in the day to day operations with more than just their hands and feet. It may also be the first time that traditional supervisors have been asked to perform a role that is closer to a coach than a dictator. It is important for a company to set the stage and to execute each phase of the transformation process successfully to insure success in the final outcome.

The key steps are:

  1. Determine the vision.
  2. Who will be the champions of change?
  3. How much outside help will be needed and what kind of help will be most effective.
  4. Establish the reason for change.
  5. Show why a team based strategy has been chosen to implement the change.
  6. Determine the key factors for success.
  7. Prepare necessary measurement and feedback systems to monitor progress.
  8. Prepare communications paths to transmit the plan throughout the organization.
  9. Begin to expand the level of ownership.
  10. Develop training plans to support each new change activity.
  11. Allow associates involved to develop detailed plans and schedules.
  12. Implement changes at a slightly higher rate than the organization believes it can handle.
  13. Monitor change and make course corrections based on objectives and performance.

  1. Assist you in preparing your vision and developing a strategy to achieve ownership in the vision throughout the organization. This would include answering the key questions of "Why do we need to change from the way we are doing things now?" and "What is in it for me?"
  2. Assist in assessment of current support systems and the identification, scheduling and implementation of necessary changes.
  3. Review of operations processes and recommendation of process changes to support a team based environment.
  4. Provide coaching, mentoring and assistance for staff members who will experience dramatic changes in job responsibilities.
  5. Assist in preparing strategies that will link organizational strategies and objectives with operating performance indicators. A well planned metrics system will ease the burden of performance analysis a great deal. It will also sort out all of the unnecessary "numbers" that most manufacturing companies have developed over time.
  6. Assist in the development of evaluation, compensation and reward systems that support the corporate strategy.
  7. Develop and conduct training programs that will support each level of transformation.
  8. Provide on-going feedback to measure the success of the change process.
